Careers In Tech

We sat down with Kath Lazaro, our Head of Technology, to learn more about her career journey and her advice for others pursuing careers in Tech.

1. Head of Technology in a Martech agency - what was your career path to this position?

To be honest I've never had a very specific vision of what I wanted to do with my career. I have always left myself open to taking up opportunities to learn something new and have had some great mentors and managers that fortunately have recognised strengths in me that I wouldn't necessarily have seen in myself. However, I will say I have always enjoyed roles that allow me to constantly shift back and forth from the very technical all the way to the business/people side of things. I find this increases the variety of work and gives me greater perspective, which ultimately helps me make better technical decisions.

2. What do you like the most about working at DBZ?

Since I joined DBZ in 2019, it's always been (and remains) a flexible and supportive environment. Even pre-covid we had a mainly work-from-home culture which really helped when I was a new parent transitioning back into work. Everyone in the company is very down to earth and we flex to support each other, which is ultimately why I've been able to step into a role like this.

3. Which women inspire you the most?

This has changed over the years, but I find I gravitate towards women (and men!) that are constantly curious and wanting to learn, open to others opinions and are true collaborators. Having said that I also have a deep respect for all Mums (outside and inside the home) because nothing prepares you for the amount of energy, time and perseverance required to raise tiny humans as well as focus on your own personal/career goals at the same time, which keeps me motivated!

4. What words of advice could you give other women pursuing careers in Tech?

Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions! Just because someone isn't asking questions doesn't mean they know everything, sometimes it's quite the opposite! While we mainly work with marketers, the technology aspect is still heavily male dominated which can sometimes feel daunting when you're just starting out. But don't let that stop you from asking the questions that will help you get the insights you need to grow and advance your career. I'd also say to be open and flexible to the opportunities that arise as you'll get more chances to figure out what you do and don't like.
